For my fellow creatives 😊✨ I'm a doer. So th For my fellow creatives 😊✨

I'm a doer. So this season without "productivity" has been difficult for me. Sometimes, when you have a newborn, or you move, or you're sick (or all of the above), it's all you can do in a day just to survive. There might be entire seasons of difficulty. In this life, it's pretty much guaranteed.

With our new (old) house we prioritized the construction of a vegetable garden. Today's harvest was peppers, tomatoes, and basil. It looks like a big harvest, and it is certainly enough to make a nice batch of tomato basil soup.

But I lost 2/3rds of my harvest to mockingbirds just taking a few bites and leaving the rest to be eaten by fire ants. Then I got sick and then sick again, and couldn't go out in the sun on doctor's orders. Neglected, my beautiful red tomatoes split in the heat and withered on the vine.

As I harvested the remains today, there were so many that I had to bury in the soil to nourish future harvests. It reminded me of my perceived failures in writing. The many ideas that will never see the light of day, but that learned experience can make me a better writer in the future.

Then there were those tomatoes that could be salvaged, if only small portions. How many days did I miss writing time because of that day's troubles? But even though I couldn't write as much or as fast as before, my mind was still working. Imagining. Plotting. Outlining one-handed on my phone with a sleeping baby in the other.

Don't get caught up in the word count. Don't just see a bunch of rotten tomatoes. Salvage what you can and press forward. The only way you truly fail is when you give up.

If you've got writer's block, or the season you're in is just not conducive to creativity, you're not alone. It's OK to take a break. Try switching to another creative outlet, or pre-writing to dip your toes back in. I'm so grateful for my friends who pressed me to do whatever I could, no matter how little, every time I had a spare minute.

And now, looking back, I can see the value in the remains I struggled to scrape together. And maybe, just maybe, I can be kinder to myself as this hard season begins to draw to a close.

Hey, this soup ain't half bad.
It was about a year ago when we discovered God had It was about a year ago when we discovered God had given us a miracle baby, against all odds. And what a year it has been!

I don't recommend moving into and fixing up a foreclosure and having a baby at the same time. And yet is has been one of the funnest and most fulfilling times in my life.

If you're going to take on any such adventure, be sure to cast your cares and troubles on Jesus, because he cares for us. And he can shoulder the vast majority of the burden and comfort you through the rest.

Stress kills my creativity. It has been very difficult for me to write during this time. And yet, I have not been idle. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, enjoy the debut of our new baby, but with weird AI privacy screening... (that last picture... hahahahah) 😂
